Jose Rizal is considered the national hero of the Philippines whose non-violent actions inspired Philippine independence. His vast range of intellectual and artistic pursuits has become an inspiration to the Filipino people. His literary works contributed greatly to the Filipino people’s desire for independence from Spain. His execution became the catalyst for the string of events that would lead to Philippine independence in 1898 and making the Philippines the first democratic republic in Asia. In 1911, The Order of the Knights of Rizal was established by the men that formed the honour guard of Rizal during his State Funeral.
